More than just a large, peach-shaped water tower, Clanton is home to about 8,500 residents who are proud to call this charming community their home. The community was named for Confederate Brig. Gen. James Holt Clanto. Situated in central Alabama in Chilton County, where it serves as county seat. Clanton is positioned between the major Alabama cities of Birmingham (55 miles to the north) and Montgomery (40 miles to the south) on the I-65. The city of Atlanta is about 150 miles northeast from Clanton.
With its central location to Alabama’s two largest cities, many businesses and industries are attracted to Clanton, equating to much opportunities for business and jobs for area residents. Two new automobile manufacturing plants have infused the city with much capital and employment opportunities. However, the backbone of Clanton’s economy has always been agriculture. Clanton is the state’s largest producer of peaches, a source of pride for the city’s residents, as memorialized with the large, peach-shaped water tower, and the annual Peach Festival.
The city is situated on the Coosa River, which has long provided many wonderful recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
