When a city is named after a legendary U.S. naval officer, it has a lot to live up to. The city of Decatur, located in Morgan County, is named after renowned U. S. naval officer Commodore Stephen Decatur. Decature who lived from 1779 to 1820 was a daring officer in the United States Navy that was awarded a captaincy at the age of only 25. Remembered for his timeless toast: "Our country; In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be right; but our country, right or wrong," is one of the most patriotic speeches given throughout American history.

To reward Decatur's legend, President James Monroe ordered the founding of what is now Decatur and named this new town after this naval legend. Ever since then, this city has been widely praised as one of the best cities to live in all of Alabama. According to the 2000 census, Decatur is home to a total population of 53,929 residents.
