Located in west central Alabama’s Upper Coastal Plain Area where the Black Warrior and Tombigbee rivers converge, the city of Demopolis is part of Marenga County. Demopolis is about 90 miles west of Birmingham, 100 miles southwest of Montgomery, and 120 miles east of Jackson, Mississippi. The estimated population of the city is 8,000 people.
Originally settled in 1817 by French exiles from Napoleon’s court, Demopolis early history was that of an agricultural community. Since then, Demopolis has undergone significant growth and today, the flourishing city harbors a diverse array of businesses supporting different industries. Two industrial parks and easy access to a municipal airport and commercial river transportation has made Demopolis a desirable location to do business. Major companies include Borden Chemical Co., Cemex Cement, and Gulf States Paper Corporation.
Despite its small size, there is plenty of things to do and see in Demopolis and surrounding area. For recreation, the Demopolis Lock and Dam has created a 10,000-acre lake perfect for many activities such as swimming, boating, and fishing.
