Lanett Real Estate Information The City of Lanett is located in mid-eastern Alabama along the western banks of the powerful Chattahoochee River on the western Georgia state line. Lanett is part of Chambers County, and has a population of approximately 8,500 people. Lanett is about 60 miles northeast of Montgomery; 90 miles southeast of Birmingham; 30 miles north from Columbus, Georgia; and 80 miles southwest from Atlanta.
Originally known as the Town of Blufton, the area changed its named to the City of Lanett when it was incorporated in 1895. The city was named by mixing the surnames of Lafayette Lanier and Theodore Bennett, the proprietors of the two textile mills, which served as the backbone for the community. Today, Lanett is part of booming industrial activities that is taking place in Chambers County and the Greater Valley Area. With its strategic location to major southern cities, the area has established a diverse industrial base that should ensure much prosperity for many years to come.
There is plenty of things to see and do in and around Lanett. The city was the site of one of the last Civil War battles which is commemorated at Fort Tyler. The historic Chambers County Courthouse has been around for its share of history, and has been seen in the movie “Mississippi Burning”. For recreation, the Chattahoochee River has long been a source of water activities for area residents and visitors.
