Every American knows the story of beloved hero, author, and activist, Helen Keller. But people often forget where Keller is from, the city that shaped her and molded her into a force of courageous strength, indomitable will, and great compassion. The city is named Tuscumbia, and that city will never forget the efforts of its greatest daughter, commemorating her with an annual festival (the Helen Keller Festival), and turning her birthplace, Ivy Green, into a monumental homage to her life’s achievements and accomplishments.

The city sits near the rushing waters of the Tennessee River in a unique section that is home to a wide range of diverse wildlife. To the city’s south is the finger-like network Lewis Smith Lake, home to some spectacular scenery amongst the many waterways – also a rich fishing destination. To the city’s east is the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge for even more diverse and wonderful wilderness setting.
