Kenai Real Estate Information The community of Kenai is situated on the Kenai Peninsula is southern Alaska about 80 miles west from the City of Anchorage. Kanai is part of the Kenai Peninsula Borough, and has an estmated population of 7,000 people.
Steeped in a long history, the area that now encompasses Kenai was once inhabitated Kachemak peoples over 2,500 years ago. Russian settlers first arrived in the late 18th century creating a fur trading post. When Alaska became part of US territory, the government established Fort Kenay here and Kanai grew as a port city at the turn of the 20th century.
Kenai's local economy boomed due to the abundant natural resources found in the peninsula including the discoveries of gold and oil in the area. Another important industry found in Kenai is tourism. Set in the stark but utterly breathtaking Alaskan landscape, Kenai was settled at the confluence of the Kenai River and Cook Inlet. Much of the peninsula is part of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge where it is not uncommon to see vast herds of caribou, elephant seals, polar bears, and artic foxes.
Kenai is a grand place to live. Although in a remote setting, you will never feel too isolated thanks to the warmth of the community and a municipal government that is always promoting events and festivals to keep the community busy. In 1992, Kenai was honored by being designated an "All-American City".
