Antioch was founded in 1849 by two brothers, William and Joseph Smith and it has since grown and thrived as a community of friendly and family-oriented citizens. In the past, Antioch had coal mines and asparagus canneries, not its main economical development revolves around major companies and small specialized businesses in and around Antioch.

A number cultural and recreational choices are available to the residents of Antioch. The Community Center downtown, provides many special interest classes through the City's Leisure Services Department, and is the home of a fine theater facility for the performing arts.
