Lafayette Real Estate Information A modern and progressive town, Lafayette, California is a gem in California and surely a place you’d love to call home!
Lafayette is located on 14 square miles in Contra Costa County, one of nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area. The City was incorporated in 1968, although settlement of the area began in 1848.
Lafayette is noted for its high quality of life with top rated schools, low crime rate, small town downtown, clean air, mild climate and oak tree-studded hills. Located between Berkeley and Walnut Creek, Lafayette has its own Bay Area Rapid Transit station (BART) and is only a 25 minute BART ride from San Francisco.
Lafayette's history began more than 10,000 years ago when the Saclans, a Miwok sub-group settled here in a number of villages. In 1797, the Saclans fought a battle with Spaniards on what was later to be Lafayette soil.
The most historic event that occurred in Lafayette was in the early 1860's when the Pony Express rode through town stopping to get a fresh horse at what is now the intersection of Moraga Road and Mt. Diablo Blvd. It remained a quiet farming village until the post-World War II building boom when many houses were built here.
