The town of Groton is located in southern Connecticut along the eastern banks of the Thames River. Groton is situated near estuarine waters since it is here where the Thames widens out and empties into the ocean at Long Island and Fishers Island sound. Because of its location, Groton has a long sea-faring history. It was an important strategic area during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and today, it is thriving thanks to its strong shipbuilding industry. In addition, Groton serves as headquarters for the Electric Boat Corporation. It is this company that is responsible for manufacturing submarines and boats for the US Military.
