Located in scenic Hartford County, the town of Newington has become a residential hotbed that attracts people that work in Hartford but would prefer to live in a smaller community. As of the 2000 census, Newington had a total population of 29,306. A part of the town of Wethersfield until 1871, this historic Connecticut town was initially known for being a source of staves for making pipes. As a result the area that would become Newington was lovingly known as Pipestave Swamp. However, as the years progressed, the area that is now Newington became known for being a major agricultural center, which spawned its new nickname of Cow Plain.

However, at this point in time, Newington is best known for being an excellent residential community. With a strong commitment to safety and high values placed on education, Newington is considered an excellent place to raise a family. Although some may call this town boring, Newington provides a comfortable way of living that is in line with modern American values.
