Pensacola Real Estate Information Located in the state of Florida, Pensacola is the county seat of Escambia County, and is a seaport city on Pensacola Bay, which connects to the Gulf of Mexico.
Tristan de Luna arrived where Pensacola now stands in 1559 and established a settlement. Although short-lived, Pensacolans claim de Luna made their town the oldest settlement in North America. Pensacola is nicknamed The City of Five Flags due to the five flags that have flown over it at various times in its history - the flags of Spain, France, Great Britain, the Confederate States of America, and the United States.
The Pensacola area is home to three historic U.S. forts, Fort Pickens, Fort Barrancas, and Fort McRee, as well as Barrancas National Cemetery. Fort Pickens was completed in 1834. It holds the distinction of being the only Southern fort not to be captured by the Confederacy in the American Civil War.
With constant sunshine and proximity to many beaches, Pensacola has a thriving tourism industry. Pensacola is a popular destination for many families, and its downtown district is famous for its historical charm and specialty shops. Other attractions includes the Pensacola Bay Bridge, Big Lagoon State Park, and Pensacola Greyhound Track and Speedway.
Although located in volatile hurricane country, many of Pensacola would not want to live anywhere else, and just see the hurricanes as a small price to pay for living within Pensacola's serendipidous boundaries.
