Cedar Real Estate Information The county seat of northwestern Georgia’s Polk County, the City of Cedartown is a place brimming with a rich culture and sparkling future. Located in a rapidly growing area of the “Peach State” of Georgia, Cedartown is home to approximately 11,000 residents who can access the opportunities of nearby Atlanta, which is 40 miles southeast along State Highway 278.
Named after the plentiful cedar forests found in and around the city, Cedartown was first settled as a trading post in 1832 along Cedar Creek in the fertile Cedar Valley by Lynton Walthall and Hampton Whatley. Before the white settlers, the area an important location for the Cherokee Indians who called the location Big Springs. Asa Prior, considered to be the father of Cedartown, played a significant role in developing and expanding the community, including attaining control and deeding the land encompassing Big Springs.
The civil war was not kind to Cedartown as the city was razed to the ground by Union troops. However after the war, Cedartown returned with a fury as it flourished as an influx of diverse businesses rejuvenated the community. Today, major corporations like Cingular Wireless, the HON company, and Wal-Mart have operational facilities providing employment for the city’s residents.
Cedartown has had its share influencing popular culture. The city was immortalized in Waylon Jennings hit 1971 album, “Cedartown, Georgia”, with its biggest hit being a song of same name.
