Formed from part of Union County and also Cherokee County, Gilmer County, Georgia is the eighty fourth county in the state. Founded in 1832 and named after George Rockingham Gilmer, who was president of Georgia twice and also a member of congress, not to mention the state legislator, Gilmer County has a population of only 23,000, spread over 439 square miles; the distribution makes it one of the least densely populated parts of state.
