Madison County was established in 1811 and named for James Madison, who was President at the time.

Botanist William Bartram accompanied the men who surveyed the boundary of 1773 land secession from which part of the county of Madison would eventually be formed. Although the land did have earlier settlers, his descriptions provide one of the earliest written descriptions of this county.

The county was created on Dec. 5 1811 from portions of Clarke, Oglethorpe, Elbert, Franklin and Jackson counties. The Henry Strickland home was used as the first courthouse. James Long of Danielsville was well recognized in the early history of the county.

Madison and Oglethorpe counties share Watson Mill Bridge State Park, the site of the longest covered bridge in Georgia. The bridge is over 100 years old. There are also facilities for camping, hiking trails, picnicking and fishing in the park.

The Madison County Courthouse, one of the most ornate in Georgia, was built in 1901 for the sum of $18,314. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. New Hope Presbyterian Church, established in 1788, is the third oldest church in Georgia. Some of the local festivals include the Colbert Independence Day Celebration, Comer Christmas Parade and the Madison County Agricultural Fair.
