Meriwether County was once inhabited by a people known to us now as Creeks. They called themselves the Muskogees. Tribes in parts of what are now three states (Georgia, Alabama, and Florida) were united through a confederacy. These people were forced off their land by the U.S. government and walked on the Trail of Tears to what is now Oklahoma.
Meriwether County, Georgia, is well-known for its links to the past. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt stayed often at the Little White House, a simple, but comfortable house that he had built on his farm. He took advantage of the healing waters of the warm springs that flow from Pine Mountain. Before FDR, Native Americans used the springs and later resorts were built for visitors.
Within the boundaries of Meriwether County are many historical houses and buildings. Many of them are included on the National Historical Register.
