Statesboro was founded in 1803 by legislative act on land donated by George Sibbald to be used as the county seat. It received its city charter in 1866.

The Jaeckel Hotel opened in 1905 and was famous for providing the finest accomodations in the area. Through the years, many celebrities, including Henry Ford, William Jennings Bryan, and Cornelius Vanderbilt, as well as several Georgia governors, enjoyed the Jaeckel's southern hospitality. The Historic Jaeckel Hotel is now Statesboro City Hall.
