The county has a population of approximately 8,000 people with major communities being Idaho City (the county seat), Placerville, Horseshoe Bend, and Crouch. Boise County is also part of the Greater Boise City-Nampa Metropolitan Area.

With a rich Gold Rush history, Boise County has long been a favorite destination of panhandlers, prospectors and miners on the hunt for gold. As the 20th century dawned, the gold rush diminished and Boise County had to rely on other sources for its economy. Today, those sources embody themselves in tourism and forestry. Many of Boise County's residents can seek greater business and employment opportunites in the nearby major cities of Boise City and Nampa.
