Lewiston, Idaho is located at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers at an elevation of 738 feet above sea level. The celebrated Lewis and Clark Expedition brought Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to the Clearwater Valley in 1805.
Idaho's only seaport and oldest city, named for Meriwether Lewis, boomed in 1860 due to gold being found in the region. Lewiston became the state's capital in 1863. The city retained the title only a few years before the capital was moved to Boise.
Lewiston is the home of Lewis-Clark State College. The college originally was established in 1893 as Lewiston State Normal. Now the college provides professional, arts, and science baccalaureate degree programs and excellent vocational and technical programs.
Cultural opportunities abound in Lewiston. The Lewiston Civic Theater supplies the valley with popular productions. Lewis-Clark State College Series brings professional opera, ballet, music and theater to the area.
