he Potawatomi Indians who inhabited the Algonquin area almost 200 years ago made camp about one mile up the river from where the present Fox River Bridge stands today. In 1834, Samuel Gillilan and family arrived from Virginia. Recognized as the first settlers, they farmed 245 acres north of Algonquin Cemetery on Route 31.
During the last half of the 20th century more people have come to reside in the village. An estimated 22,000 live here today, with expectations of reaching 30,000 people by the year 2005.
