St. Clair County is a county located in the state of Illinois, just east of St. Louis Missouri.
In 1970 as determined by the U.S. Census Bureau St. Clair county was the mean center of the U.S. population. As of 2000, the population was 256,082. The county seat of St. Clair county is Belleville, Illinois.
It is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan area and St. Clair county is also the first county established in the state of Illinois. It existence actually precedes the state of Illinois as it was one of two counties established in the Northwest Territory in 1790. The county was named in honor of Arthur St. Clair, governor of the Northwest Territory, who organized the county in 1790. In its original boundaries, the county covered two-thirds of present day Illinois. The 2000 census shows a population of 256,082 people.
