Elwood acquired its name from Homer Elwood Frazier, the son of one of the first settlers of this community. The community was established first in 1853 and incorporated a couple of years later as the Town of Quincy. The name changed to Elwood in 1869. Elwood’s growth has reflected the growth of the railways. The city is situated on the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railroad, which attracted a lot of businesses to the area.
