Founded in 1906 by the United States Steel Corporation as the home for its new plant. The city was named after the chairman of U.S. Steel, Elbert H. Gary. Steel production had made Gary a lucrative city as it housed one of the country's major steel producing facilities. However, with the waning of the steel industry, Gary has positioned itself for further economic growth by attracting progressive technology companies.
Gary is nationally known as a microcosm of architectural styling dating from the early 1900s to the 1980s. Its impressive architectual pool is worth of future historical preservation. Also, Gary's most famous son, Michael Jackson has promised to build a performing arts center for the city.
