In 1871, C.C. Hutchinson, a U.S. Indian Agent, made an agreement with the Santa Fe Railroad to found a community at the point where the railroad crossed the Little Arkansas River. Mr. Hutchinson and the railroad were to share equally in the profits from the land sales. For a time, the community was called “temperance city”, a reflection of Mr. Hutchinson’s Baptist beliefs. By the next year Hutchinson was incorporated as a third class city with 600 residents and became the Reno County Seat.
