The Oregon Trail traversed what is now the heart of the city of Lawrence. Situated on the Kansas River, the city of Lawrence is the county seat for Douglas County, Kansas.

Lawrence has a rich and fascinating history. The city was founded by settlers from New England in 1854 in an effort to keep the territory free from slavery. Bitter fighting over the issue of slavery occured preceeding the civil war. The Watkin's Community Museum features Lawrence's history as a Free State Fortress.

Education is important in Lawrence as the city was ranked 6th in the nation for the amount of bachelor degree holders. Lawrence is home to the beautiful University of Kansas and the Haskell Indian Nations University, which has a student body representing more than 100 tribes from more than 35 states.

Lawrence houses Dyche Museum of Natural History, the Spencer Museum of Art, and the Anthropology Museum. Historic structures are found downtown and in some neighborhoods.

Nearby Clinton Lake is one of the best boating lakes. Two top public golf courses are found here. One of Lawrence's residents, James Naismith invented the game of basketball here.
