Located in the rolling hills of northeastern Kansas on the Missouri River, the City of Leavenworth is the county seat of Leavenworth County. Leavenworth was founded in 1854, the first incorporated city in Kansas. The city grew south of Fort Leavenworth, the oldest active Army post west of the Mississippi, which was established in 1827 by Colonel Henry Leavenworth. The City is on the outskirts of the Kansas City Metropolitan area.

Leavenworth's main industry is prisons - it is the site of a large federal prison and several smaller prisons, including the military's primary prison, the United States Disciplinary Barracks. Overshadowed by the prisons is the fact that Leavenworth supports a variety of large and small business enterprises. A major employers of the city is Hallmark Cards.

With plenty of historical charm, attractions of te city include Fort Leavenworth which houses an interesting army museum. The Leavenworth Historical Society Museum is also worth a trip, as is a nice drive around Leavenworth to view a number of elegant mansions.

Leavenworth is a conservative community with a diverse population. A strong community spirit has been maintained ever since the city's inception, as residents are proud of Leavenworth's outstanding amenities and progress.
