Merriam, Kansas

The City of Merriam is located in northeast Johnson County, Kansas, approximately eight miles from downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Johnson County, along with four other Kansas Counties and six Missouri counties, comprise the metropolitan Kansas City region with a population of over 1.5 million. The City of Merriam is a prime middle class community with a sound business basis in the center of the metropolitan region.

Merriam has been a pioneer and a leader in the development of the entire Kansas City area. Merriam is one of the oldest developed communities in Johnson County. The list of firsts for Merriam is not only impressive but it shows how crucial Merriam has been to the success of this region. Merriam was the site of the first Bell Telephone Office in Johnson County, 1908; the first high school, Shawnee Mission Rural, now Shawnee Mission North, 1922; the first public library, 1956; the first major park in Johnson County (Antioch), 1956; the first full service hospital, Shawnee Mission Medical Center, 1962.

Today, Merriam is still a growing and thriving community with lots of new things on the go. The most important thing, however, is Merriam good American spirit.
