Alexandria Real Estate Information Alexandria, Louisiana, is a small city located smack-dab in the center of the State. About 100 or so miles from the southern strongholds of Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Alexandria is a key hub city for surrounding states to the North and West. The town population was last counted to be 46,000 people.
It's part of a level plain in the center of Louisiana's beautiful long-leaf pine forests, though there are hardwood forests interspersed throughout. Agriculture is a big industry here, with cotton, sugar, and alfalfa cultivation being the most popular.
The city is named after Alexander Fulton. In 1786, he received a grant from Spain to create the first settlement.
Today, Alexandria is part of the Alexandria-Pineville metropolitan area. Both cities sit opposite of one another on the Red River. The river serves as the stream of life for the region, bringing in people, food, and commerce.
There's plenty to do here, from walking through the Riverpark, fishing, and waterskiing. Alexandria is also home to Louisiana's only National Forest.
Of course, you've probably heard of gumbo. There's lots of it here as it is a central Louisiana specialty.
