Situated in mideastern Louisiana along the mighty Mississippi River in an area historically known as the Acadian Coast, is charming Ascension Parish. The Parish is home to such idyllic communities like Abend, Gonzales, Prairieville, and Donaldsonville (the Parish seat). Just north of Ascension Parish is Eastern Baton Rouge Parish, which is home to the state capital of Baton Rouge. Ascension Parish supports an estimated population of 80,000 people.

Ascension Parish was one of the original parishes created by the territorial government in 1807. The parish was initially settled by the Houma tribe and Acadian refugees who had migrated to Louisiana after more than a decade of exile in Maryland and Pennsylvania. The Acadian pioneers established prosperous small farms along the Mississippi River.

Today, Ascension Parish boasts a bustling economic environment where the agriculture and the petro-chemical industries constitute the foundations of the local economy. The City of Gonzales has emerged as a regional governmental center and economic hub.

There is plenty of things to see and do in this historic region. You'll see some of the most the South's best collection of late nineteenth-century river town architecture in Donaldsville. Popular attractions include a Bayou Alligator Tour, the Cajun Village, and historic Fort Butler.
