There are records that show that as early as 1690, a community of French traders had settled in this area that participated in trade with the native Opelousas tribe.
Eventually, Opelousas would become incorporated as a city in 1821 and actually served a short stint as the Confederate capital of Louisiana in 1862 during the Civil War. Opelousas is a city with a gorgeous natural landscape and a vibrant local arts scene. A major center of Zydeco music, a form of folk music that originated from the early twentieth century Creole population in Louisiana, Opelousas is definitely one of the most exciting cities to live in Louisiana.
