Located in gorgeous Louisiana, Opelousas enjoys the reputation of being the third oldest city in the Pelican State. Located in St. Landry Parish, the city of Opelousas had a total populaton of 22,860 at the time of the 2000 census. A multicultural community that is in the heart of Cajun country, the city of Opelousas received its name from the Opelousas tribe of Native Americans that resided in this area. There are records that show that as early as 1690, a community of French traders had settled in this area that participated in trade with the native Opelousas tribe.

Eventually, Opelousas would become incorporated as a city in 1821 and actually served a short stint as the Confederate capital of Louisiana in 1862 during the Civil War. Opelousas is a city with a gorgeous natural landscape and a vibrant local arts scene. A major center of Zydeco music, a form of folk music that originated from the early twentieth century Creole population in Louisiana, Opelousas is definitely one of the most exciting cities to live in Louisiana.
