Boston isn't called "The Athens of America" without a reason. It is the oldest and most powerful city situated in New England. In fact, it was the Boston Tea Party that sparked the War of Independence.

With some 591,000 people, Boston isn't exactly a sprawling metropolis like LA or New York. However, once you factor in all the neighboring suburbs of the Greater Boston Area, there are over 5.7 million people in the region.

Bostonians take pride in their city. Distinct neighborhoods like Newbury Street and the Boston Commons have an unique atmosphere in the American landscape. The city is no stranger to sports either. The Boston Red Sox are a perennial favorite in baseball, along with the Bruins in the NHL and the Celtics in the NBA.

One thing that Boston is defintiely notable for is its many different educational institutions. Harvard and MIT are just two names in a massive list of big universities located in the city.

Of late, Boston has been undergoing a comprehensive and ambitious redevelopment of its infrastructure. The "Big Dig" as it is known to residents, is a plan to remove the raised highways that divide the city and place them underground. By the time it's done (no one is sure when) the city is expected to enjoy a new renaissance.
