Needham Real Estate Information Needham is a fantastic town bordering the massive Boston Metropolitan Area. Located conveniently on the Route 128 freeway ring that surrounds the city of Boston, residents have easy access to great opportunities in the city, as well as quaint small-town pleasures in their own town.
For a time, Needham wasn't a suburban residential base for Boston. It was once a country gateway for the social elite of Boston who lived on Beacon Hill and Back Bay. Many luxury estates built in the 1800s still stand today. Indeed, there are many historic sites dotting the town including a war momument honoring the lives of Needham war veterans, and a cemetary with headstones dating back to the 1700s.
The town proper is located on rocky uplands looped by the Charles River. The land represents some of the finest grazing areas for livestock. Much of Needham's early progress was stunted by the river's fast flowing waters. Eventually, saw mills and grist mills opened up on the river in the 18th century.
It wasn't until the railroad was extended to Needham that land speculation brought many people to the area. Manufacturers moved in, making everything from underwear to shoes. By 1931, Route 128 sealed Needham's role as a suburban base for the Boston Area. Today, it's a great place to enjoy the scenic beuaty of New England while being just minutes from Downtown Boston.
