Under the guidance of a citizen volunteer committee, Reading is looking forward to celebrating its 350th anniversary in 1994. This committee is only one of many volunteer boards, committees and commissions that assist an elected board of selectmen and a representative town meeting in governing the town. The town manager is responsible for day-to-day operations of the local government.

Reading's original settlers came from England in the 1630's to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Many arrived through the ports of Lynn and Salem. Reading played an active role in the American Revolutionary War. Minute Men were prominently involved in the engagements pursuing the retreating British Red Coats after the skirmish at Concord Bridge.

The governmental structure of the Town of Reading has evolved since its creation in 1644. This year, reading will celebrate its 360th anniversary of its incorporation as a town.
