Grand Rapids Real Estate Information Within the great state of Michigan, Grand Rapids has historically been a city that has contributed greatly to the Wolverine State. Often referred to as Furniture City or the Second City of Michigan, Grand Rapids is the second most populated city in Michigan. Located on the banks of the Grand River, Grand Rapids was founded in 1826 by Louis Campau. Previously a settlement made up of missionaries and fur traders that co-existed with the Ottawa tribespeople located in this area, Grand Rapids officially became a city on May 1, 1850.
Previously a center for furniture and automobile manufacturing, Grand Rapids has been able to overcome the general manufacturing slump that has affected Michigan. By diversifying its local economy by attracting more bio-tech companies, Grand Rapids is currently creating new infrastructure that bodes well for its future. Current construction projects includes a new art museum and the new DeVos Place is expected to contribute to this city's growth.
Regardless, Grand Rapids has managed to appease its citizens by mixing big city sophistication with small town practicality.
