Portage is a city located in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. The fertile land of Portage had made it a center for agriculture at the turn of the century. It earned the distinction of Celery City of the nation. The city has an estimated population of 47,000 people.

People began to settle in this area in the 1800s. Settlers discovered the rich soil that made it the perfect growing environment for celery. The area remained prolific in celery production until the middle of the twentieth century. Today, Portage is a thriving city that has attracted a diverse and stable business base.
