St. Johns Real Estate Information The quaint little community of St. Johns is the county seat of Clinton County in the mideastern region of the "Wolverine State" of Michigan. This city is about 18 miles north of the state capitol of Lansing, 60 miles east from Grand Rapids, 60 miles northwest from Ann Arbor, and 80 miles from the Motor City of Detroit.
The city was originally established in 1853 by ther Reverand C.A. Lamb and developer John Swegles and when the area was incorporated as a village four years later, officials named the land St. Johns - the "Saint" in reference to the Reverand Lamb and "Johns" from the first name of Mr. Swegles. St. Johns became incorporated as a city in 1904.
A flourishing community, St. Johns is anchored by a diverse economic base. Blessed with surrounding fertile farmland, agriculture has long played a prominent role in the community. Manufacturing for the automotive industry is also a key player in the city, as is tool and die manufacturing. In addition, many of the city's residents make the daily commute to nearby Lansing for work and business opportunities.
St. Johns is also recognized for its outstanding school district, particularly in the fine arts and theatrical arts. For higher education, the fine institution of Michigan State University is located nearby in Lansing.
