The historic community of Sauk Rapids was on its way to becoming one of the leading metropolitan areas of Minnesota towards the end of the 19th century before Mother Nature had her say. On that fateful April 14th day in 1886, a devastating cyclone swept through Sauk Rapids, then a rapidly developing river valley town, destroying everything in its path including killing 44 people and injuring hundreds. That changed the fate of Sauk Rapids forever, for better or worse.

Many residents of Sauk Rapids today would argue that everything works out for a reason. Although it may not be a ‘big city’ it was originally destined to be, Sauk Rapids has evolved into a quaint cozy little community that its residents are more than proud to call home. And in any case, if the residents wanted a big city, they only need to cross the Mississippi River and hit the City of St. Cloud, which is only a mile away. Also, the major metropolis of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Twin Cities is just an hours drive southeast from Sauk Rapids.

Today, Sauk Rapids has everything you would ever need in a community - a strong economy supporting a wide array of business and employment opportunities, an excellent school district, and plenty of housing options from old Victorian homes to recently constructed subdivisions.
