Kirkwood, Missouri, is an affluent suburb to the west of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Today it is a 9-square-mile city of about 27,000 people in West St. Louis County. Known around St. Lous as the "Queen of the St. Louis Suburbs", this title has been rightly deserved for the past century. Kirkwood was the first planned suburb west of the Mississippi, and exists today thanks largely in part to the railroad extension that cross through the city. The city is named in honor of James Kirkwood, the engineer who was responsible for planning out the railroad. Today, the city's obsession with trains continues with their loving maintenance of the historic train station which is a National Historic Place. Mixing the old with the new, this station which was built in 1893 is used today as part of Amtrak's passenger train system!
