Liberty Real Estate Information How can you go wrong with a city named after one of America’s core beliefs? Liberty Missouri, more than lives up to its name as a place where people can be free to do what they choose, and the history of the city more than reflects that.
Early, on the city was a jumping off point for many of the frontier adventures taken on by the earliest pioneers. This was primarily due to the cities proximity to the Missouri river. Also early on, the city was known for something that is not often associated with Liberty. A large jail was built here, in the early days of the Republic.
One of the first prisoners of this jail was the founder of the Mormons Joseph Smith. He was put in jail in Liberty for expressing his religious beliefs. But after he was released he and his follows streamed through the city…70,000 of them in all, on their way to a New Zion, in what would eventually become Utah.
Later, another prison was established here. During the Second World War Nazi prisoners were shipped from Europe on boats to Liberty and put in jail in a converted Turkey farm. These soldiers were then forced to work on farms thus aiding the war effort…Liberty indeed.
