The first African-American to vote in an election under the Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, Thomas Mundy Peterson, voted here in 1870. The city was briefly considered as the site of the US Naval Academy.

The city of Perth Amboy is in Middlesex County, on the north bank of Raritan Bay, at the mouth of the Raritan River. It is part of the Middlesex-Somerset-Hunterdon, New Jersey metropolitan area. State Highway 440 connects Perth Amboy with Staten Island over the Outerbridge Toll Road. In the vicinity are Edison and Middlesex County College.
