Union is a Walsh Act town located in Union County, New Jersey. The Walsh act permitted municipalities to adopt a non-partisan commission form of government. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 54,405.

The town is close to the major economic and commercial center of the country, New York City, New York. Also Union County is one of the world headquarters for top biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical companies like Merck and Co., Lucent Technologies, Schering-Plough and Wakefern Food Corp. Other industries within the county include retail, pharmaceuticals, petroleum and telecommunications.
