The town has an interesting, long history, and was settled around 1685. The early name was Wincoram, which according to the native tribe of the Secatogues meant a passage between hills or a valley. Coram was originally used for cattle pasture by the settlers, but played a prominent role as strategic headquarters during the War of 1812.

Coram is part of Long Island's bustling economy with traditional strengths in the maritime, agriculture, and fishing industries. About a quarter of Coram's residents are employed in some matter related to healthcare. There are three hospitals in close proximity to the town - John T. Mather Memorial Hospital, St. Charles Hospital, and Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.
