In 1882, the Durham-Greensboro Southern Railway line began offering service to a small area west of Chapel Hill, to accommodate travelers to and from UNC. In order not to disturb the scholars, it was decreed that the railroad station was to be built at least a mile from the UNC campus. Carrboro was born.

Carrboro, with a population of around 16,000, is said to be the most densely populated town in North Carolina. We are home to a community of artists, musicians, writers, creative minds, and just plain folks. We even have our very own Poet Laureate, Patrick Herron, who established the first Carrboro Poetry Festival, a weekend event that featured 40 poets and was free and open to the public.
