Incorporated as a town in commeration of President Andrew Jackson in 1842, the once quiet farming community has grown into the business, retail, medical, banking and cultural center for Onslow County. All these activities provides plenty of economic opportunities.
The city is best known for housing the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River which had been in the city since 1940. Since its inception, the military bases have added substantial growth to the city. Half of Jacksonville's residents live aboard Camp Lejeune and New River Air Station.
With a small hometown feel and hospitality along with big city amenities and economic opportunities available, many families are drawn to Jacksonville. The city offers an excellent recreation and parks system for outdoor activities. It is also regarded as a safe city primarily because of the military's looming influence. In 1992, Jacksonville was named an All-America City by the National Civic League.
