The community of Rockingham was originally established in 1783 with the construction of a courthouse that served as the court for Richmond County. The next year, the area was named Rockingham in honor of the second Marquis of Rockingham (Charles Watson-Wentworth), who was a staunch supporter of America’s independence. Today, Rockingham is a vibrant little city that supports the heavy agricultural activities found throughout the county. Manufacturing also plays an important role in the local economy, which transportation facilitated by the Rockingham/Hamlet Airport.
