Settlers, who first came to the community in the early 1800s, lived in log cabins and noted a 'forest of gigantic trees,' along with the presence of rattlesnakes and wolves. It is said that bears, snakes, and wild turkeys inhabited the woods, creeks, and ravines in this area as late as the 1820s. In the 1830s and 1840s, there was a large emigration to the areas adjacent to Cleveland; however, the area in which Cleveland Heights is located was one of the last areas to be settled, due in part to its remote location at the top of a bluff.
