The city's history can be traced back to 1796, when the land that now encompasses East Liverpool was purchased by Isaac Craig under the terms of the Land Act. After going through several names, the city was christened Liverpool by a group of nostalgic English potters that had migrated to the community. Incorporated in 1834, the city's name was changed to East Liverpool due to the presence of an Ohio town named Liverpool in Medina County.
