Kettering, Ohio, is a small city situated south of Dayton. The city began as the Van Buren Township in 1841. By 1952, the city has grown in size and its citizens wished for incorporation. They decided to name the new city after its most outstanding citizen. His name was Charles F. Kettering, and he was the famous inventor of the automobile self-starter.

Kettering received its city charter in 1955, and elections first took place in 1956. Since then, every four years the city has held a vote for a new council.

According to the 2000 census, Kettering housed a population of 57,500. With an annual budget of $66 million, the city employes 400 full-time workers, 82 police officers, 51 firefighters and paramedics, and 107 volunteer firefighters.
