Norton was named after one of the first owners of the township, Birdseye Norton. It became its own township in 1818. Today, Norton is still independent and thriving; it is a place of business, real estate and recreation. Norton is one of the best towns in Ohio to live!

From its modest beginnings, Norton was a simple and quiet place but the increase in land interest and the great opportunities available drew people from all over the area. It is still a place that peak the interest of business and new residents due to Norton’s prosperous dynamic.

Construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal, which began in 1827, allowed improved North-South boat travel options until its abandonment in 1913. Electric trolley lines were installed from Barberton to Wadsworth through Norton in 1905 and interconnected Norton Township to other lines throughout Northern Ohio.

Norton's population remained small until after 1900 but in 1920 it increased to nearly 3,000 residents. By 1940, it had risen to over 4,000 and by 1950, the population had grown to 7,500. In 1980, the population peaked at over 12,000 and has remained steady and strong through the 1990’s until today.
