A Short History.
By January of 1852, gold was discovered in the Rogue River Valley. Miners came to seek their fortune, and farmers soon followed as they discovered the fertile soil and favorable growing conditions the valley had to offer.
Medford was incorporated February 24, 1885 (approximate population 400) as a depot for the Oregon-California railroad. The town grew rapidly as a major shipping railway center, and by 1896 had a population of 2000. In just over 100 years, Medford's population has grown to 63,000 people and is now the business and medical center of southern Oregon. Medford is the county seat of Jackson County whose total population is nearly 182,000. Agriculture, tourism, medical and other service oriented businesses are the economic backbone to Medford's economy.
