1855, it began as fishing village, then was plotted in 1866 and developed as a resort with a coastal steamer route to San Francisco.
Today Newport, population 9,960, preserves the charm of the turn-of-the-century era in The Old Bay Front, a waterfront section of the town. Newport's location at the entrance of the Yaquina Bay has made fishing an important industry. Commercial and charter fishing boats sail from the harbor. Many tourists also enjoy jetty fishing, crabbing and clamming in the area. Newport is also one of the most popular ocean diving areas in the state. Newport is the county's governmental, cultural and educational center. Oregon Coast Aquarium, Newport Performing Arts Center and the Hatfield Marine Science Center are here.

On the far north end of Newport is the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. This is a must see attraction when visiting Newport. On most days you can climb to the top of the lighthouse and visit the local interpretive center for historical displays and local area information. Further south, just before you cross the bridge is the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. From here you have more terrific views of the Newport area. Each lighthouse is different from the other but both give a terrific glimpse back into Newport's history. Make sure you have your camera when visiting these spots, you'll want to take pictures.
The Oregon Coast Aquarium and Hatfield Marine Science Center are another one-two punch that are favorites for kids and adults alike. These two spots are very close to one another making it easy to visit each of them on the same day. Luke Rummell Owner-Broker Company: A1 real estate
Having fun is a big part of coming to Newport. But something that makes us different is that much of the fun is educational, too. You could touch an octopus. Or see the results of a 14 million-year-old lava flow. Or learn about the history of the Oregon Coast. The possibilities are great, and so are the opportunities. Here are only a few of the attractions you can find in and around Newport:
Newport's Historic Bayfront
With turn-of-the-century storefronts, the scent of cooking crab and artwork depicting life on the Oregon Coast, the Bayfront offers a fascinating walking tour. The city has turned this one-mile strip into a gigantic canvas for artists. This seaboard district offers art galleries, gift shops, fresh seafood markets, chowder houses, restaurants, commercial fish processing plants and markets, and is home to Newport's marine tours, whale watching and sport fishing fleet.
Burrows House Museum
Built in 1895, the Burrows House Museum features exhibits of Lincoln County history, including period rooms of the Victorian era with household furnishings and clothing.
Oregon Coast History Center
This log cabin museum focuses on the history of pioneering, the local Siletz Indian tribe, and the logging and fishing industries in Lincoln County.
Yaquina Bay Lighthouse
The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, completed in 1871, is Newport's oldest building. No longer operated as a lighthouse, the restored facility is now a historical museum and gift shop.
Oregon Coast Aquarium
Opened in 1992, the Oregon Coast Aquarium ranks among the top 10 aquariums in the nation. Experience their newest exhibit Passages of the Deep, where you'll experience the mysteries of the open ocean through a submerged acrylic tunnel. Indoor exhibits feature marine life found in wetlands, sandy and rocky shores and the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean. Outdoor exhibits are home to sea otters, seals, sea lions and a giant Pacific octopus. The Aquarium has one of the largest walk-through seabird aviaries in North America.
Mark O. Hatfield Marine Science Center
The Marine Science Center reopened in 1997 after being closed for more than a year for a $5 million renovation and remodeling. Built in 1965, the Science Center is the hub of Oregon State University's coastal research. The public wing focuses on the research efforts and studies of the Center's more than 300 marine scientists. Among many discoveries, visitors can explore the geology of the ocean floor, learn about coastal hazards such as earthquakes and tsunamis, and find out about advancements made in whale tracking and research. The Center's exhibits include a "touch" tank of tidal animals and a live octopus.
Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area and Interpretive Center
In 1980, Congress dedicated 100 acres of Yaquina Head as an Outstanding Natural Area. The area is well known as an excellent place to view gray whales, explore tide pools and observe harbor seals. You can see beautiful sea and shore birds anywhere in Newport, but for a real treasure trove, the rocks off Yaquina Head are home to the largest variety of resident and migrating seabirds on the coast. It's also home to Yaquina Head Lighthouse, Oregon's tallest and second oldest operating lighthouse. The new Yaquina Head Interpretive Center provides more than 500,000 annual visitors with information and highlights about the Head's unique environment and lighthouse.
